CHAPTER EIGHT
Seònaid
The snow whipped around us as we walked the six blocks to the MacDougal brothers’ shop. Ami clutched her sign to her chest, smiling the whole way. I could barely see her through the snow, but I felt her happiness. When she’d hugged me outside the ruins of her pub, her scent had filled my nose. She smelled of yeast, hops, and vanilla. Her lush, curvy body had pressed to mine and for the first time in more than a week, I’d felt hope.
When we entered the shop, Ami removed her wool hat and scarf. Her red curls shone in the magical blue flames of the shop’s lamps. Her cheeks were rosy from the cold. She looked healthy—so much healthier than the last time I had seen her.
Then there was Ealasaid. For the first time since she learned of my heritage she’d insisted that I use her name. Something had changed. Perhaps it was merely my repairing the sign for Ami, but perhaps it was more. She had watched my aura at the Black Gael. She had to know that I cared for Ami. Did she know we were destined?
Ami chatted with the MacDougal brothers. A wide smile was plastered to her face as she presented them with the sign. “I trust you can repair the gilding?”
“Of course!” The builders were both makers. The younger one withdrew a tin of gold flakes and set it next to the sign. “We bind gold where our fingers touch.” The older one smoothed his fingers over the dented rooster and as we watched, the gold flakes flew through the air and affixed themselves to the sign. It took only moments before the rooster was once again proud and gleaming. “We will paint and polish the rest of the sign tomorrow. With your permission, we will raise the sign as soon as the exterior framing is complete.”
Ami agreed readily and looked over at us. There was such light in her eyes. Ealasaid stepped forward. “Love, we need to return to my shop. I will send Raven over. Promise me you will wait for him?”
“No.” Ami shook her head. Her red curls settled around her face. She had freckles. I had not noticed them before. But now that her skin had more color, they dotted her nose. “I am perfectly capable of getting myself home.”
“It is below freezing,” I protested.
“I am used to the cold, Seònaid,” she replied. “This is a mild day for Gralvein.”
“Please, Ami.” I reached out and laid my hand on her arm.
“By the Fates.” Ealasaid’s quiet words behind me were barely audible. I turned to see her blue eyes dark and her mouth open in shock. She was watching my aura. When she noticed me looking at her, she blinked once and her pupils contracted back to a normal size. She closed her mouth and shook her head.
Ami hadn’t seemed to notice her sister’s words. She ran a hand through her curls. “I will compromise with you. When I am through here, I must visit the wine merchant.
